Additional Information The 2000 presidential election pitted Republican Presidential Nominee George W. Bush and VP Nominee Dick Cheney against the Democratic Presidential Nominee Al Gore, who was the sitting vice president and running with Joe Lieberman. It was a very tight election and is one of only 5 elections (1824, 1876, 1888, 2000, 2016) where the popular vote winner was defeated in the electoral college. Gore was an elected official in Tennessee for 16 years before he served as vice president under President Bill Clinton. He announced his candidacy for the presidency in Carthage, Tennessee in June 1999 and during the 2000 campaign, he established headquarters in Nashville. After losing the presidential election, he did not run again for state elections in Tennessee or any other state.
