In the 1940s, WFRB – the first radio station in Baltimore, Maryland – ran a regular program for children called “The Hobby Club of the Air.” Sometimes called “Uncle Frank’s Hobby Club,” the show was developed and presented by Frank Woodfield, a man who was considered one of Maryland’s leading educators of the time and a former director of the Maryland Academy of Sciences. For five years, “Uncle Frank” helped kids avoid delinquency by teaching them to develop their hobbies and exposing them to new hobbies. The program was sponsored by Rice’s Bakery.
