The El Salvador flag was adopted in 1972 and is based off the flag of the United States of Central America. The two blue stripes of the flag represent the Pacific and Caribbean Sea and the white stripe represents peace. The version of the flag used by the government features the coat of arms on the white stripe. The coat of arms features a triangle representing the three branches of government and inside the triangle are five volcanoes representing the five former members of the federation.
