Ad lib is an early 19th century abbreviation of ad libitum, a phrase meaning "as much or as often as necessary or desired" or "with free rhythm and expression." Ad-libbed or ad-libbing in more modern times means to improvise a speech and is a term used in comedy schools and clubs for when the comedian tells jokes off of the memorized and performed script.
