On December 15, 1991 the United States celebrated the 200th anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights. The document, which is made up of the first ten amendments of the Constitution, included freedoms like the right to free speech, the right to bear arms, and the right to a quick and fair trial. The Bill of Rights was initially used to keep the power of government in check, but by the early 20th century it was used more for court rulings and was considered vital to the protection of the rights of the individual. The anniversary in 1991 was commemorated with buttons, stamps, coins, and a cross-country tour of a copy of the Bill of Rights.
