Garfield is a comic strip character created by Jim Davis. At the time of its creation, Davis had noticed that dog comics were doing well but that cats were not represented, so in 1978, he published a strip chronicling the life of a cat named Garfield, his owner Jon, and Jon's dog Odie. As of 2013, it held the Guinness World Record for being the world's most widely syndicated comic strip.

Garfield is commonly depicted as being lazy, obsessing over food, and disdaining both Mondays and diets. The comic's popularity has been largely attributed to its lack of political conversation since it instead focuses on the humor of mundane life. Since the strip's debut,it has spawned several animated television specials, two animated television series, two animated feature-length films, and three animated direct-to-video movies.
