Additional Information The Malagasy Protectorate is present day Madagascar. Before becoming Madagascar, the territory was dependent to France, with local autonomy and some independence. Britain had been the first colonizing nation on the island, arriving in 1820. France originally gained the territory in 1882 after agreeing to recognize Britain's claim to nearby Zanzibar. In 1897, France made Malagasy Protectorate a French colony, changing the territory name to French Madagascar. Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar, did not gain complete independence from France until June 26, 1960. The current flag of Madagascar is white, red, and green.
