The city of St. Louis is located in the state of Missouri on the western bank of the Mississippi River, close to where it meets the Missouri River. The city's population peaked in the years following World War II, at 856,000. As of the last census count in 2017, the population was at 308,626. St. Louis was founded in 1764 by French fur traders and became part of the United States in 1803, as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The city is home to two professional sports teams, the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and the St. Louis Blues hockey team as well as the headquarters for Anheuser-Busch. A well known and popular landmark, the Gateway Arch, is located downtown. It is the world's tallest arch at 630 feet.
