J. R. Bowman of Clinton County, Illinois and his brothers formed Bowman Dairy Company in 1891. Bowman Dairy was one of the leading dairy products suppliers in the Chicago area. In the 1930’s, Bowman employed over 3,000 residents, but by 1966, Bowman Dairy was purchased by rival, Dean Foods.
Defense bonds, later known as war bonds, were debt securities issued by the U.S. government to finance its defense initiatives and military efforts in times of war.
