The Cars are a rock band that originated in Boston in the late 1970's. While they are known for their synth-heavy melodies many other genres such as rockabilly, garage rock, new wave, and pop influenced their music. After being signed to Elektra Records in 1977, band members Ric Ocasek, Benjamin Orr, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, and David Robinson released their debut album The Cars the following year. The Cars included such songs as "Just What I Needed" and "My Best Friend's Girlfriend" and soared to number 18 on the Billboard charts, going platinum in 1978.
