Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President of the United States from 1869-1877. Grant was initially a soldier and became the Commanding General of the United States Army known as the Union Army during the Civil War. The Republican Party unanimously elected Grant as their presidential candidate after the war because of his exceptional leadership and advocacy to enforce civil rights for African freedmen. Grant was also an advocate for paying debts and reducing the national debt which was an overall result of his presidency.
