The illustration on this button was created by Herb Gardner in 1959. Although Gardner went on to become a Tony Award winning playwright and screenwriter, he first found success as a cartoonist. His best known work was a comic strip called The Nebbishes. The comic was picked up by the Chicago Tribune and became syndicated in over 60 newspapers between 1959 and 1961. As its popularity grew, The Nebbishes began appearing on all sorts of merchandise, from cocktail napkins to statuettes.
