George Stanley McGovern served as a history professor and he was later elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1956 and then re-elected in 1958. He was the presidential nominee for the Democratic Party in the 1972 election but was defeated by incumbent Richard Nixon. He was opposed to the United States getting involved with the Vietnam War and his platform focused on issues such as agriculture, food, nutrition, and hunger.
