The Oxnard Salsa Festival is an annual event started in 1993 that takes place in Oxnard, California. Attractions include a salsa tasting tent, salsa recipe contest, international foods, craft and retail vendors, festival souvenirs, a kid zone, and Dancing with our Community Stars. Around six different salsa bands play at the festival with the setup including a main stage, a small dance floor, and a large seating area.
One of the main attractions of the festival is the charity fundraiser, Dancing with our Community Stars. The fundraiser is a salsa dance contest similar to the TV show Dancing with the Stars on ABC. Competitors pair with the best local salsa instructors and dance to raise funds for their charity of choice. The chosen pairs have nine weeks to rehearse in preparation of the competition where they will face a panel of judges. Spectators can “vote” for their favorite dancers by making donations before and during the event. One dollar equals one vote. Since this fundraising contest began, more than four hundred thousand dollars has been raised for charity.
