Popeye and Olive Oyl are cartoon characters created by C. E. Segar. Olive was first introduced in 1919, and Popeye followed in 1929. The two are portrayed as a couple in love. Their love is often challenged by another character Bluto, who Popeye must fight to defend his girlfriend’s honor.

The couple have appeared in comic books, comic strips and movie shorts. Cartoons are shown in syndication. In 1980, “Popeye the Movie “ was released, starring Robin Williams and Shelly Duvall.
