| Additional Information | The Hamilton Grammar school originally began with one school house in 1729 in what was then dubbed Hamlet parish in Ipswich, Massachusetts.. As the town expanded the need for more schools and teachers began to grow, so 3 more schools were added to cover all four districts of Hamilton: North, East, South, and West. As the town expanded more and more mills such as the Norwood Mill and the Willowdale saw mill were constructed along the Ipswich River.
The schoolhouses lasted for over 250 years, many of the original buildings lasting for over 110 so that many students that went there went into the same building as their great grandparents. By 1949 all of the land had been sold and the buildings repurposed, mostly for churches. |
