In recent years, commuting by bike has markedly increased in the United States. Between 2004 and 2014, the number of individuals who bike to work have risen by more than 60 percent from 488,000 to 786,000. Though this accounts for roughly 0.6 percent of all U.S. commuters, some major U.S. cities like Portland and Seattle have seen a greater increase. Both locations have put “bike share programs, bike lanes, and pedestrian-friendly streets” in place to support bike commuters. According to the U.S. Census, the average commuting time via bicycle is 19.3 minutes, and men are more likely to commute by bike than women.
