Additional Information

The first successful blood transfusion was completed on dogs in 1665 England. Clara Barton, a former American Civil War nurse, founded the American Red Cross in 1881 after witnessing neutral aid being provided to war-wounded in Switzerland. Red Cross employees are to this day deployed with American military units. The Red Cross also developed the first blood drive program in the 1940s and continues to be the source of over 40% of blood in the United States.
