Additional Information | Direct Memory Access Systems are used in the modems of computers to allow some hardware subsystems to access the system memory without using the central processing unit. The DMA System essentially allows the computer to multitask. Furthermore DMA allows the copying or moving of large amounts of data within the memory of the computer. DMA ultimately allows for transfer of large blocks of data while freeing up the computer to continue to function. Without DMA channels the central processing unit would be fully occupied with any other read or write process. The data transfer process becomes faster and more easily executed with the DMA System. Floppy disks, which also store bits of memory, become unnecessary with the automatic transfer of data through the DMA System. |
