Michael Dukakis, along with his running mate Lloyd Bentsen, ran as the Democratic nominee for United States President during the 1988 election cycle. His major party competition was George W. Bush, who was the Republican nominee. Due to several campaign blunders, Dukakis and Bentsen ultimately lost the election by a large margin (receiving 45% of popular vote, and 21% of electoral votes).
