Evelle J. Younger ran for Governor of California in 1978 as the Republican candidate. He lost the election to the incumbent, Democrat Jerry Brown, by a wide margin. Younger had been serving as California’s Attorney General since 1971, where he was instrumental in shaping the California Environmental Quality Act. He had also worked as an FBI agent, a judge, the Los Angeles County District Attorney, and an actor in legal dramas. His wife, Mildred, was a well-known political activist.
