Marie Shear coined the phrase, "Feminism Is the Radical Notion That Women Are Human Beings." She was a writer, editor, and activist. As a columnist for New Directions For Women  she wrote, “Shear Chauvinism” and was active in the National Writers Union and the National Organization for Women in Brooklyn. She was honored in the book Feminists Who Changed America, 1963–1975, by Barbara J. Love.
