Additional Information | The liberal party, founded in 1944, is a minor political party in New York State that generally supports democratic candidates, but has been known to support more liberal republican candidates as well. Vice President Al Gore ran for president as a member of the Democratic Party in the year 2000. His chosen vice president elect was Joe Lieberman, the first Jewish man to be on the presidential ticket for a major American political party. Gore and Lieberman campaigned along with First Lady Hillary Clinton who was running for the senate. On October 19, 2000, all three attended a Service Employees International Union (SEIU) rally in New York together. The SEIU 1199 the rally was for is the largest healthcare union in the United States. The three attended other rallies and campaigned together, and they gained the support of the Liberal Party in New York among other organizations. When Al Gore chose Lieberman as his running mate, there were great hopes the choice would boost support in New York state. Democratic party campaigners hoped the move would undermine George Bush’s efforts to meld together the republicans in the Northeast and gain support in those states for the election. The election was close. Gore and Lieberman received more popular votes, but were defeated 271 to 266 in the electoral college. Hillary Clinton was elected as senator from New York on November 8, 2000. |
