After World War I many women of the 1920s strove for independence, began to dress boldly and went against regular societal conventions. The notable style of a flapper girl has become a well known stereotype for the 1920s, featuring a short bob haircut, drop waist dresses, and bedazzled headbands.

Notable aspects of the flapper girl was their makeup and fashion choice. It was a style of makeup that was intended to be noticed by the public, with heart shaped lips in a bold color, fine tweezed brows, and dark kohl lines ringing their eyes. Pre World War I, many women were focusing on a more feminine and light makeup look, while mid 1920s women went for a more exaggerated approach. Makeup was placed into compacts and lipstick tubes and became far more portable so that women could continue to apply makeup while on the go or dancing the nice away.

Fashion trends were also changing in order to make mobility easier. Hemlines on dresses were getting shorter, stockings were normally rolled just to the knee so that dancing was easier. Headscarves were a popular statement piece to not only show off the new bob haircut, but to keep your hair up and out of your face when dancing or driving. A popular scarf tying style was the “turban” style that was twisted around the head and then secured with a bejeweled broach.
