Additional Information | In 2006, incumbent Hillary Clinton ran for a second term as New York Senator, against Republican nominee John Spencer. Clinton did face some initial competition for the Democratic party nomination, largely based on the controversy surrounding the Iraq war. However, she ultimately became the nominee, and later won the Senate race in a landslide victory (83% of the total votes cast) against her opponent. Clinton is also known for being First Lady when her husband, Bill Clinton was President from 1993-2001, and later for becoming Secretary of State under the Obama administration from 2009-2013. |
