“Howdy” is an interjection used to express a greeting. Short for “How do you do?”, it is a type of greeting dating back from England circa 1712. It became significant in the Southern US during the 19th century and was spread towards the West by US Civil War Veterans. Although “Howdy” is primarily used in the West, it has been often used and heard throughout the US today.
