Additional Information | The longest-running sporting event in the United States first started in 1875 is horse racing at the Kentucky Derby. The event was started by Meriwether Lewis Clark, who was inspired by the Epsom Derby in England. Clark is a grandson of the famous explorer William Clark. Originally, it began as a jockey club meeting, but slowly grew into the large event that it is today. The Kentucky Derby takes place in Louisville and has operated without interruption, even continuing through events like The Great Depression and both World Wars. |
