Dr. Robert E. McAfee served as a Trustee for the American Medical Association (AMA) from 1984 to 1993. The AMA Board of Trustees is a group of “elected officials...responsible for implementing AMA policy.” After serving as a Trustee, Dr. McAfee was elected as the President of the American Medical Association in 1994. At the time the American Medical Association had 300,000 members. He was the first president of the organization to come from the state of Maine, and he served as president for one year.
Dr. McAfee was most well-known for his advocacy against domestic violence. He strove to make it a medical issue that the AMA helped address when before domestic and gun violence were seen as social issues outside of medical scope. He was appointed to the American Bar Association's Commission on Domestic Violence before serving on President Clinton’s Advisory Committee on Family Violence. Dr. McAfee also founded the organization titled the Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence and served on the Executive Council of Maine’s Communities for Children initiative.
Outside of his AMA involvement he worked for thirty-one years as an attending surgeon at the Maine Medical Center, and at Mercy Hospital in Maine Dr. McAfee was the Chief of Surgery.
