Sombrero derives from the Spanish word “sombra” which means shade. While most will associate the hat with Mexican culture it originates in Spain. The hat popped up in the 17th century and was appropriated into Mexican culture when the Spanish came over. Today there are different types for different situations. Mariachi bands usually wear sombreros with brims so large they need a chin strap to keep it on. Quincianos are work hats that are light and simple. Veintistietes are the high end sombreros that needs around one month to be crafted. Sombreros that looks stylish and modern are mostly used by women in nature.
