Additional Information

The Iowa High School Music Association (IHSMA) held a State Contest in 1941 and this button was given to the participants. The IHSMA was founded in 1920 by Superintendent G. T. Bennett of Rockford, Iowa who suggested a statewide music contest series for high school marching bands, orchestra, and other music ensembles. The first state high school music festival was held in 1926 at the University of Iowa. As the Association grew, the state festival developed into multiple state contests to accommodate all member schools. By 1941, the Association had 641 member schools and it formed an all-Iowa band, orchestra and chorus made up of students from member schools.
