New Kids on the Block (NOKTB) was formed in the early 1980s in Boston, Massachusetts by producer Maurice Starr, who had previously worked with the Boston-based group New Edition. NKOTB is considered one of the first modern boy bands, helping to pave the way for late 1990s groups like Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. Donnie Wahlberg was just 15 when Starr discovered him, impressed with his rapping. Wahlberg recruited his friends Danny Wood and brothers Jordan and Jonathon Knight. NKTOB's fifth member, Joey McIntyre was discovered by Starr and just 12 when he joined the group. While their first album was a commercial and flop, NKOTB's second album (released in 1988) soared up pop charts thanks in large part to a radio station in Florida giving airplay to the album's first single.

By the early 1990s, the New Kids on the Block had become one of the most popular musical groups in the United States with a growing fanbase made up primarily of girls and young women; their official fan club that had over 200,000 members, one of the largest ever in the US. Fans often identified one particular group member as their favorite, and collected branded merchandise featuring that member, exemplified here with a button proclaiming the wearer "Danny's Girl."

The group disbanded in 1995 to work on other projects before reuniting again in 2008. Since then, NKOTB has had multiple reunion tours and even released a new album in 2024. In 2025, the group launched a multiple-month residency in Las Vegas a the Park MGM with a show that blends their classic hits with typical Vegas-style showmanship.
