Additional Information

The Beatles were nicknamed "bugs" by Ed Sullivan after seeing a news story on them on the Evening News with Walter Cronkite. Additionally, they were nicknamed "the British bugs" and "the golden bugs" by members of the American press. They were also sometimes called "bugs"' in an pejorative manner, as in the case of Soviet propaganda. The phrase "Beatles Are Bugs" is often used in a humorous fashion to show how the younger generation doesn't identify with the era that the Beatles were popular in, if they heard of them at all.
