Africa University is a private institution located near Mutare, Zimbabwe. AU is associated with the United Methodist Church, and was founded in the 1980s by a group of African United Methodist bishops. The establishment of the university was backed by both Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe and the United Methodist governing body. Major funding for the university comes from donors, specifically members of over 34,000 United Methodist churches in the United States and around the world.
