| Additional Information | The Beatles formed in 1960 and steadily grew in popularity in the their native Liverpool and—quickly—worldwide. An official fan club was formed in the early 1960s and the club’s best-known secretary was Freda Kelly who held the position from 1962-1972. In her time as secretary, Kelly helped answer letters that included extravagant requests from the band like locks of hair and for band member Ringo Starr to sleep on a pillowcase the fan sent. Fan club merchandise ranged from small items like buttons to larger mementos like exclusive albums. The Beatles enjoyed remarkable success in their ten-year run and broke up in 1970. The fan club was dissolved in 1972. |
