Additional Information | “The Greatest Show on Earth” is the slogan for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey circus. The first known circus in the United States was held in Philadelphia in 1793, although traveling circuses did not become popular until the 1820s. Barnum and Bailey was formed in 1881 and the Ringling Bros. began in 1884. The slogan “The Greatest Show on Earth” was used by Barnum and Bailey while the Ringling Bros. used “World’s Greatest Shows” to promote their act. In 1907, Ringling Bros. bought Barnum and Bailey, although the two shows continued to tour separately until 1918. In 1967, Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey was purchased by Feld Entertainment. |
