Additional Information | Pennsylvania is a US state and one of the 13 original colonies. It was founded by William Penn in 1682 as a refuge for his fellow Quakers. “Sylvania” means “woodlands” in Latin, which characterized its heavily forested geography. The state’s capital, Philadelphia, means “brotherly love” in Greek. This city would become the location of the first and second Continental Congresses in 1774 and 1775, in which the Declaration of Independence was ratified. In addition to Philadelphia, which is situated on the easternmost part of the state, Pennsylvania has another large metropolis, Pittsburg, which is located in the far west. |
