Additional Information | The dog (Canis lupus familiaris) is a subspecies of the gray wolf (Canis lupus). Along with the cat, it is one of the most popular and omnipresent domestic animals in the world. It has become a hunting companion, a protector, and a friend. Although the exact dates are uncertain, dogs are believed to have first been domesticated starting around 30,000 years ago. This domestication was not a single event, but a slow process unfolding over thousands of years. Dogs probably assisted their own domestication by following nomadic people for the scraps they left behind. Over time, selective breeding for various desirable traits would produce more than 400 unique breeds. |
