On January 17, 1991, an international coalition led by the United States launched a military strike against Iraq in an effort to end the countries occupation of Kuwait, which it had invaded in August of 1990. The offensive, which was codenamed as Operation Desert Storm persisted for five weeks. By late February, thousands of U.S. and allied troops advanced into Iraq and Kuwait from Saudi Arabia, where they had been stationed since Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. The Iraqi military faced devastating losses to their infrastructure and power as a result of the coalition against them. On February 28, Iraq ended the conflict by accepting a cease-fire. Though the U.S. and its allies emerged victoriously, the operation was still controversial and caused for many in the United States to question just how big of a role the country should have in Middle East affairs.
