Additional Information | Iowa State College was the former name of the Iowa State University of Science and Technology, more commonly known as Iowa State University, Iowa State, or ISU. The school was founded in 1858 and was a coeducation college from its inception. Iowa State became the nation’s first designated land-grant institution after the state accpeted the 1862 Morrill Act, a bill introduced by Justin Morrill and signed into law by Abraham Lincoln to promote and fund agricutural and industrial colleges by granting them lands. The state of Iowa was the first to accept the terms of the Morrill Act which provided the funding needed for the State Agricultural College and Model Farm, the predecessor of the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (1898–1959) and the Iowa State University of Science and Technology today. |
