The Monterey Bay Aquarium opened in 1984 in Monterey, California. It was the first nonprofit public aquarium to exhibit a living kelp forest and it was also the first one to care for and display a captive great white shark. Over two million visitors come to the aquarium each year to see over 550 species of marine life. Guests can also view daily feedings at the sea otter and penguin exhibits.
