In 1978, Pepsi promoted a campaign to switch their bottling methods, due to consumer preferences, to a different type of bottle.  Consumers requested bottles to be lightweight and plastic instead of glass, making the product lighter and less likely to break.  Pepsi was the first company to switch their bottles from glass to plastic. They also introduced the industry's first two-liter bottle.
