Additional Information | This is a protest button from the 1980's environmental movement. The name "Smokey Watt" on the hat band is a play on the names of mascot Smokey Bear and James G. Watt, 43rd U.S. Secretary of the Interior. Appointed by President Reagan in 1981, Watt's tenure was marked by controversy, stemming primarily from his hostility to environmentalism and his support of the development of federal lands by commercial interests. Watt periodically mentioned his Christian faith when discussing his approach to environmental issues, citing the impending return of Christ as a reason he was not concerned with environmental preservation. |
