Mineo also performed in plays in New York and Los Angeles throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In the late 1960s, Mineo was one of the first major actors in Hollywood to publicly admit his homosexual lifestyle and was a pioneer in paving the way for future generations of gay actors. In 1976, after returning home from a play rehearsal, Mineo was attacked and stabbed to death by a stranger. It was rumored that the attack was a result of his being gay, but in 1979 when the killer was convicted, and it was determined the attack was a robbery. Sal Mineo fans still have a strong presence today, both on a website and a Facebook page devoted to the actor whose life was tragically cut short. |
