The study of stamps is called "philately," from the French philatélie. This word comes from the Greek roots of phil-/philo- [lover of] + ateles [untaxed or free]. Previously, the recipient of mail had been responsible for paying the postage, whereas stamps now placed the burden of payment on the sender.
