The optimistic proverb does not have a definitive origin. “He picked up the lemons that Fate had sent him and started a lemonade- stand” is the earliest and closest line to the proverb. This was written in an obituary by Elbert Hubbard about Marshall Pinckney Wilder in 1915. In 1948 the proverb we know today was found in a self-help book titled How To Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie.
