Additional Information The 2000 presidential election pitted Republican Presidential Nominee George W. Bush and VP Nominee Dick Cheney against the Democratic Presidential Nominee Al Gore, who was the sitting vice president and running with Joe Lieberman. It was a very tight election and is one of only 5 elections (1824, 1876, 1888, 2000, 2016) where the popular vote winner was defeated in the electoral college. Gore was an elected official in Tennessee for 16 years before he served as vice president under President Bill Clinton. He announced his candidacy for the presidency in Carthage, Tennessee in June 1999 and during the 2000 campaign, he established headquarters in Nashville. After losing the presidential election, he did not run again for state elections in Tennessee or any other state.

In the 2000 elections, the Indiana Republican Party nominated George W. Bush for President, Richard Lugar for Senator, and David McIntosh for Governor. At the time, Bush was serving as the 46th Governor of Texas. It was his first presidential run and he won the election against the Democratic Party candidate, and then Vice President of the United States, Al Gore.

Richard Lugar was already serving as Indiana Senator at the time of his campaign. Lugar’s first campaign for United States Senate was in 1974 but he was defeated by Democrat Birch Bayh. He was successful during his second try in 1976 and was consecutively reelected in 1982, 1988, 1994, 2000, and 2006. Lugar served as Senator from 1977 – 2013. Previously, Lugar had ran for Republican party nomination for President in 1996 but was unsuccessful.

David McIntosh was a member of the Unites States House of Representatives during his campaign. He lost the gubernatorial election to the Democratic candidate Frank O’Bannon, 57 percent to 42 percent.

In June 1992, then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton was featured as a guest on The Arsenio Hall Show. His appearance made headlines due to Clinton's saxophone performance of Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel". Clinton's performance on the show is considered by many as a significant moment in his political career. Clinton's eccentric performance helped build his popularity among younger voters. Upon the episodes release, images of Clinton's performance became used for his presidential campaign, which he would go on to win.

The 1926 Philadelphia Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition was a public relations event intended to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of America and 50th anniversary of the 1876 Centennial Exposition. Sadly, the exposition was not a great success. Opening day was rained out and attendance was far below expectation. The fair went into receivership and the assets were auctioned off.

Beginning in 1937 and lasting until 1945, the Second Sino-Japanese War was a brutal conflict that China had to shoulder mostly by itself throughout World War Two. In 1937 the Allied countries were keen on isolationist stances in international affairs and opted to ignore the Japanese invasion, in lieu of a formal rebuke from the International community. Seeing China fight a desperate war to resist the Japanese Invasion without support from other countries inspired many Chinese immigrants to aid their former countrymen by holding rallies and organizing fundraisers to support the war. The 1941 San Francisco Rice Bowl Festival was the largest of three major events held in California to raise funds for Chinese troops, the event was wildly successful with over $100,000 raised (or almost $2 million when adjusted for inflation).
