Batman is a comic book superhero who is featured in television shows, cartoons, and feature films. He first appeared in a DC Comics series in 1939, and has since had a continuous presence in American pop culture. Batman is the secret identity of millionaire Bruce Wayne, who does not have superpowers, but makes use of intellect, wealth, and a stash of technological gizmos to fight villains like Catwoman, the Penguin, and the Joker, in his home of Gotham City. The character of Batman first appeared in 1939, drawn by Bob Kane (1915-98) for Detective Comics, issue number 37.

WXYZ- TV is based in Detroit, Michigan. It first went on the air in 1925 as WGHP, a sports radio station. In 1930 the station was purchased by Kunsky-Trendle Broadcasting and the name was changed to WXYZ. In 1948, WXYZ began broadcasting on television. It is Detroit's oldest TV station.

In the 1960s television show, Gotham City's Commissioner Gordon had a direct line to Wayne Manor. This was a bright red phone dubbed the "Bat Phone."

The  Band of Mercy indicates a group of school children who had pledged to be kind to animals and to keep them from cruel usage, first formed in 1882 as an extension of the MSPCA.  Soon there were hundreds of Bands of Mercy nationwide, totaling approximately 250,000 children.

This button was created for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, which was established in 1868. The back paper was used as an advertisement for the C.D. Kennedy Co.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers was founded in 1888 by 19 machinists in Atlanta, Georgia. The IAM now has more than 600,000 members.

"Ask Dad, he knows" was part of Sweet Caporal Cigarettes' ad that appeared in the movie, It's A Wonderful Life.  A sign for Sweet Caporal cigarettes appears in Mr. Gower's drugstore. A young George looks directly at the sign below and is inspired to go talk to his father.

Sweet Caporal Cigarettes were produced by Kinney Bros. Tobacco Company, New York starting in 1878. Shortly after, Kinney Bros merged into the giant American Tobacco Company. A.T.C.'s monopoly was broken in 1911 but they retained Sweet Caporal. The popularity of the brand may be linked to its novel use of collectible cigarette cards included in each pack. There was Victorian theater stars, illustrated Mutt and Jeff phrases, American flags, an Aircraft Spotter Series in the 1940s ("Learn to know friend from foe"), and many baseball series over the years.

The character of Archie Andrews first appeared in 1941. In 2010, Archie, Veronica, and Betty were commemorated in an official US Post Office stamp as part of the "Sunday Funnies Series." In the stamp, the three characters are sharing a chocolate soda.
