"On February 20, 1962, John H. Glenn, Jr., became the first American to orbit Earth. An Atlas launch vehicle propelled a Mercury spacecraft into Earth orbit and enabled Glenn to circle Earth three times. The flight lasted a total of 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 23 seconds before the Friendship 7 spacecraft splashed down in the ocean. Most major systems worked smoothly, and the flight was a great success as an engineering feat."

The Feast of Pirates was a three day festival held on Wrightsville beach in the town of Wilmington, North Carolina during the late 1920s. Tourists from all over the region, as many as 28,000, traveled to the port city. They had the pleasure of watching historical reenactments, boat races, competitions, and various parades. The reenactments ranged from George Washington's ceremonious entrance into the city in 1791, to Blackbeard's march to City Hall. Excessive alcohol consumption and public drunkenness during the 1929 festival, however, caused concern for committee members and other city officials. Nevertheless, it was the Great Depression that put the final nail in the coffin for the Feast of Pirates.

The 1986 World Exposition of Transportation and Communication, or Expo '86, was a World's Fair held in Vancouver, Canada. The fair was opened by Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Many famous entertainers performed or were at the event, including: Jacques Cousteau, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Joan Rivers, George Burns, Bob Newhart, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, Donovan, Depeche Mode and Loverboy.

Evel Knievel's Snake River Canyon jump was a stunt disaster. Crowds rioted the previous night because of beer and concession prices. When the Sky-Cycle was launched, the parachute accidentally deployed and strong headwinds blew Knieval back in the canyon, where he crashed and walked away with minor injuries. The Sky-Cycle did not clear the canyon in test runs and Knievel said, "Everyone told me not to do it, but I was determined to keep my word, so I climbed up and strapped in. When I punched the power button I thought, 'God, here I come.'"

The CN Tower is a communications and observation tower in downtown Toronto, Canada. It is 1,815 feet tall and was completed in 1976. It was the world's largest tower until the completion of the Burj Khalifa and the Canton Tower. Today, it remains the tallest freestanding structure in the Western Hemisphere.

Brockton, Mass. was the largest shoe manufacturer in the United States from the Civil War until the late 20th century. Powered by the Salisbury Plain River. "Shoe City" housed dozens of shoe factories, including Grover Shoe Factory, M.A. Packard Co., the E.E. Taylor Co., Stacy-Adams and Co. and the Charles A. Eaton Co.

Charles Augustus Lindbergh (February 4, 1902 - August 26, 1974) is an American aviator, author, inventor, explorer, and social activist. He gained worldwide fame for his 3,600 mile non-stop flight from New York to Paris in 1927. He flew his single seat, single engine plane Spirit of St. Louis to accomplish this feat. The Lindbergh cross-Atlantic flight inspired a generation of WWII pilots and was heavily celebrated with buttons and other souvenirs.

During World War II, three Protestant churches in the small village of West Winfield, New York, came to the conclusion that there was a way that they could come together and contribute to the war effort. To preserve the resources required to heat and maintain each churches’ separate buildings, services could be rotated between the three buildings. One week they would be in the Baptist church, the next in the Methodist church, and the following week in the Congregational church.

The spirit of community they experienced in this endeavor led them to decide to consolidate themselves into one church. Churches that weren’t part of the original three were also invited to join in the spirit of ecumenicalism. Today the church that they formed together continues on as The Federated Church of West Winfield, “A Place to Belong.”

Shabbona is a village located in DeKalb County, 30 miles west of Aurora IL.  As of 2010, the population census was 925.  The village is named after Chief Shabbona of the Potawatomi tribe, who traveled through the Fox Valley warning white people of the approaching Black Hawk war.
