The blueprint nuclear power image was taken from the cover of Shut Down: Nuclear Power on Trial: Experts Testify in Federal Court. Published in March of 1979, the book was written by Jeannine Honicker, the plaintiff, in a lawsuit against the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Using federal court transcripts, the story chronicles the demand for all 290 licensed nuclear facilities to shut down until federal regulations were revised. At the time, anti-nuclear concerns grew due to radioactive waste disposal, nuclear accidents, and terrorism. On May 7th, 1979, a march against nuclear power was held in Washington D.C., it was estimated over 70,000 attended, including California Governor Jerry Brown.

Between 1941 and 1945, roughly six million Jewish individuals were systematically targeted and killed by the German Nazi party. Many were taken to concentration camps where they were forcibly tattooed with identification numbers, such as the one seen depicted here. In 1944, both men and women at the camp Auschwitz were given numbers in an "A" series; unlike the number shown here, this "A" series concluded in the mid 25,000s. Many pieces of holocaust remembrance paraphernalia feature the Hebrew word "Zakar", or "Zachor", which literally translates as "remember." It is featured here using the Hebrew alphabet to ensure the the catastrophic tragedy is never forgotten.

Additional Information

Greenpeace is an international environmental organization that was founded in 1971 in British Columbia in response to nuclear testing in Alaska. It has become a large, global organization, with millions of members, offices in 41 countries, and a headquarters in Amsterdam. They work to protect endangered species, end environmental abuses, and raise public awareness of environmental  issues. Greenpeace has a reputation for direct, non-violent, and dangerous actions. They also fight for national and international rulings on environmental abuses.  Over the course of its history, the organization has attracted both praise and significant controversy.

The Save the Whales campaign, which began in 1975 in Vancouver,  was well-known. Greenpeace activists on high-speed inflatable rafts positioned themselves between whales and whaling ships. They also brought back pictures and videos that they used in an awareness campaign. Their efforts resulted in the 1986 global ban on commercial whaling.

Additional Information

The Blue Whale is the largest mammal. They are an endangered species that likes to travel from tropical to polar areas of the ocean. Blue Whales do not harm people, but they occasionally bump into boats and kayaks. They eat krill via filter feeding when they open their large mouth and taking in whatever is in their path and their bodies are made to filter out what they do not want. Blue Whales eat up to twelve thousand pounds of krill a day. Most of the record-breaking lengths have been female with one reaching 110 feet. They can weigh up to 209 tons. The largeness of this animal is only possible because they live in the water. They can live for 80 to 90 years. Baby Blue Whales weigh three tons, are about twenty-three feet when born, and are nursed for six to seven months.

Greenpeace International uses non-violent creative action to raise awareness and confront systems that threaten the environment. Save the Whales is one of many conservation campaigns to raise awareness for the endangered species.

After the initial success of Steamboat Willie in 1928, Walt Disney created new partnerships to sell merchandise of his characters. His first major partnership, in 1932, was a 50/50 split with ad-man Herman "Kay" Keman. Keman licensed Mickey Mouse for a variety of products including home goods, toys, and clothing, to be sold nationwide through department stores and mail-order catalogs. Childrens' socks and stockings were branded as "Mickey Mouse Hose" and were offered in different sizes, lengths, and colors. Mickey Mouse Hose had imagery of Mickey Mouse on the heel, toe, or cuff. Some designs were reproduced in the 1970s or 1980s.
