This is one of dozens of variations of “Don’t follow me, I’m lost” buttons. The exact origins of the quote are unknown though it may have originated from the famous Indian philosopher, Uppaluri Gopala Krishnamurti, also known as U.G. Krishnamurti, who was most known for rejecting ideas of enlightenment and called himself an “anti-guru”.

SO SO Happy was an accessory and apparel brand from the 2010s that specialized in hoodies and plush toys featuring cute monster characters (like the one seen on this button). The designs were reflective of popular youth fashion trends of the time such as the "scene" aesthetic which added a colorful neon twist to emo and punk looks. SO SO Happy also produced monster cartoons on YouTube and collaborated with other brands and individuals such as Jones Soda and actress Madison Pettis. Though the unicorn character featured here doesn't appear in any of the brand's designs after 2011, SO SO Happy was active through 2017 before it stopped updating its social media accounts; as of 2022, the SO SO Happy website is no longer operational.

Maurita E. Gavin ran for Alderman of Chicago's 41st Ward in 2011. The Alderman of each ward is an elected official who represents their constituents on the Chicago City Council. Gavin lost the election for Alderman to Mary O'Connor by 2% of the votes. O'Connor would become the first female Alderman elected to the 41st Ward.

"Nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah" is a widespread children's taunt. These words are often sung to the tune of "Ring Around the Rosie," with the child's hands to their ears and tongue sticking out. While unassuming, this practice is actually a fascinating example of convergent musical development. As composer Leonard Bernstein noted in a lecture at Harvard University, "Research seems to indicate that this exact constellation of two notes (descending minor third), and its three-note variant, is the same all over the world, wherever children tease each other, on every continent and in every culture. In short, we may have here a clear case of a musical-linguistic universal."

Co-founded in 1983 by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles public school system, D.A.R.E. (“Drug Abuse Resistance Education”) aimed at preventing drug use amongst students through critical educational programming. Certified police officers worked with K-12 students to develop decision-making skills and to “Just Say No” to drugs and alcohol. Kids were taught to love themselves/boost their self-esteem, strengthen resistance to peer pressure, and create and develop higher goals. By 1986, Congress passed the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, which allocated funding for D.A.R.E. and other drug use prevention programs.

While this particular button may not be directly related to D.A.R.E., it most certainly comes from the same era of teaching students to “say no” to drugs. The emphasis on loving yourself while drug free echos D.A.R.E. programming which taught students self-esteem skills. The current iteration of D.A.R.E. is grounded in scientific research with emphases on diversity, the dangers of social media, and the opioid crisis. 

And yet, while the programming has definitely saved lives, current scientific research shows that such programming may be ineffective at best and harmful at worst. The way forward, especially with the ongoing opioid crisis in America, is not clear, but the importance of keeping our children safe from drugs and alcohol prevails.
