The American Cancer Society Bike-a-Thon, first held in 1972, is a nationwide event held annually that honors cancer survivors, raises money for cancer research, and spreads awareness. Participants ride either individually or in groups and can begin from a number of starting points. At the end of the route, riders are greeted with food, entertainment, ceremonies, and family activities.

Candles generally have great significance, from birthday cakes to religious celebrations. For many, birthday candles are believed to possess magic for granting wishes. Within the Christian faith, a candle can be decoratively used as a representation of the God’s light or the light of Jesus. They can also be ritually placed beside the impression of a religious figure or be burnt as a votive offering. 

"Best wishes for your birthday" is a phrase that is often used to express good wishes and congratulations to someone on their birthday. It is a way of communicating a hope that they have a great day and that they are surrounded by love, happiness, and good fortune. It is a common phrase used in birthday cards, messages, and greetings.

Founder Russ Berrie started his business with $500, he rented a garage in Palisades Park, New Jersey, and launched his own firm named after himself. Berrie intended to design, market, and distribute “impulse” gift items. From the start, Russ Berrie & Company produced a string of hit products that quickly found their way onto countertops, desks, and dashboards across the country. Among the company’s earliest creations: Fuzzy Wuzzies (tiny fur ball-like critters bearing messages like “You’re My Best Friend” or “Wild Thing”), troll dolls (squat gnomes with plumes of brightly colored hair) and the Bupkis Family (a motley collection of endearingly ugly rubber figurines). The owner believed in the power of “transformational giving,” partnering with energetic, visionary leaders to change the world for the better. He took an entrepreneurial approach to philanthropy, using his keen interpersonal skills to identify people and causes in which to invest and working closely with partners to hone strategies and set expectations.  “There is nothing more important in life than helping a fellow human being.”  — Russell Berrie (1933-2002).

The City of Battle Ground, Washington, took its name from an 1855 standoff between a company of soldiers from Fort Vancouver. However, this event never resulted in a battle. People from the Klickitat tribe, led by a man named Umtuch, fled their internment near the fort. Captain Strong led his men in pursuit of the Klickitat. Accounts of what transpired vary, but somehow, Umtuch was shot. Nevertheless, Captain Strong and the tribe members came to an agreement that the tribe would return to Fort Vancouver. After mourning their leader, the tribe members honored their promise and returned to the fort. Captain Strong became a target of ridicule, and the site of the “battle” became known as “Strong’s Battle Ground.” The name “Battle Ground” stuck.

Owner of Gator’s Drive-in, W.C. Hunter created B.A.C. (or Buck-A-Cup) coffee day for the Easter Seals of South Carolina in 1951. In 1954, Hunter began to sell buttons in exchange for a free coffee on the day of the event. B.A.C. Coffee Day is an event in sponsorship with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers’ Association and the S.C. Restaurant Association. In 1953, Hunter and fellow sponsors the S.C. Law Enforcement Officers’ Association and the S.C. Restaurant Association changed the event to raise money for children with disabilities. It was called “Coffee Day for Crippled Children”. They raised $3,133 that day and $5,000 the next year. As of 2001, this event has raised over $12 million for children with disabilities.

This pin was issued by the Student Mobilization Committee (SMC) in honor of an April 24, 1971 event hosted in Philadelphia as a part of an anti-Vietnam protest. The SMC, which was also known as Student Mobe, began in 1966 as a group arranging campus protests against the war but grew to one of the largest and longest active national anti-Vietnam war organizations with 15 campus organizations nationwide. The popularity of the organization is often attributed to their strict avoidance of civil disobedience and policy of non-exclusion. It also welcomed all anti-war activists, regardless of their ideology or political leanings. The organization began disbanding in 1973 in conjunction with U.S. troops withdrawing from Vietnam.

The Alabama Jubilee is an annual hot-air balloon race that has taken place in Decatur, Alabama since 1978. Each year the Alabama Jubilee Hot-Air Balloon Classic includes around 60 pilots from various states to compete in a two-day competition during Memorial Day weekend in Decatur, which is known as the "Ballooning Capital of Alabama."

New Holstein, Wisconsin, holds an airshow every year at the New Holstein Municipal Airport. In 1964, the airshow fell on the weekend of June 12th-14th. Sunday, the 14th, was the dedication of the community’s airport facility. This event was sponsored by Association of Commerce, the city of New Holstein, and the sales of booster buttons.

 On Friday, there was an information booth near the fire station which featured an appearance from Miss New Holstein. Friday was also reserved for retail sales promotion. Saturday’s events began at 1pm with a Thompson Flying Service Plane flying over head at an altitude of 10,000 feet. Skydivers jumped out of the plane and free-fell for upwards of 30 seconds before opening their parachutes at 2,500 feet that blossomed into canopies that land at a target in the center of the airport. Saturday night, there was a dedication banquet and ball. Sunday’s events began at 12:30 with band concert, followed swiftly by the dedication ceremonies at 1pm. The airshow opened at 2pm with a sky diving parachute jump holding the American flag. Sunday also featured the annual meeting of the Wisconsin Antique Aircraft Association as well as aircraft fly-ins from all over the state.

The 1982 World’s Fair was held in Knoxville, Tennessee with the theme “Energy Turns the World”.  It opened on May 1, 1982 and closed on October 31, 1982 after receiving over 11 million visitors.  New inventions featured at the Knoxville World’s Fair included touch screen display screens, shelf-stable milk, and Cherry Coke from Coca-Cola.  Nations from all over the world participated in the fair- the Peruvian exhibit featured a mummy that was studied at the fair and Hungary sent a large, automated Rubik’s Cube for display (the Rubik’s Cube’s inventor being Hungarian).
